Retainers are virtually non-existent, even for guys like Gadd. And obviously he can't be very tightly "retained," given his touring schedule with Clapton and others. What's he going to do, miss a Clapton gig if he gets an afternoon phone call from Paul?

Mellencamp didn't have Aronoff on retainer, nor did Billy Joel retain Liberty DeVitto. And Springsteen's band isn't on retainer either. Julio Iglesias was the last act I've heard about who had very decent retainer deals. It really has become a thing of the past. Not sure about how it is in Nashville, but there are SO many great players out there, most artists don't feel it necessary to retain anybody.
